The WNMU cross country teams ran well at the University of California – San Diego annual Triton Classic Saturday. The men finished sixth out of nine teams with Mustang top runner Paul Gonzalez (West Covina, CA) coming in 13th. The women had a solid run but were unable to post a team score with only four runners.
The teams from the University of Alaska Anchorage had a big day, as the Seawolves swept both the men's and women's team titles. All five of the team's scorers on the men's side finished in the top 10 – including four of the first five – while UAA had the third, fourth, 12th, 18th, and 19th place finishers in the women's event.
Gonzalez finished the 10K run in 33:24.3. He finished 23 spots ahead of teammate James Molony (Tamworth, Australia), 36th overall and a time of 34:41.0.
Sophomores Cassandra Sanchez (Acoma Pueblo, NM/Laguna Acoma High School) (Acoma Pueblo, NM) and Amy Roybal (Pojoaque Valley, NM/Pojoaque Valley High School) (Pojoaque Valley, NM) were the top two finishers for the Mustangs in the women's race, finishing 63rd and 72nd places out of 126 individual runners. Sanchez's time of 25:10.8 was nine seconds faster than Roybal's.
Head coach Macario Campos and his Mustangs will now have two weeks off from competition to prepare for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships on October 25 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
